The Jewelry Drive
The Founding Initiative of GEMS
THE GEMS JEWELRY DRIVE
-
Our Jewelry Drive was initiated to show survivors of abuse residing in shelters on Christmas morning, that that are seen, cared for and most importantly, that they are not alone.
The countless testimonials we have received show that although the gifts are appreciated, the meaning behind them is what touches the ladies so much.
Feeling worthless often accompanies particularly mothers during this phase. We are so happy that our gifts remind them they matter to all of us, and to the thousands of women who donate every year.
-
Due to the incredible efforts of our Board of Directors, ambassador team and the community, we have now given over 26,000 Christmas gifts (3-5 pieces of jewelry each) to survivors in shelters on Christmas morning!
Thank you to all who have packed, collected, donated and delivered to make this possible!
-
From October to December we do a big jewelry drive!
Thousands of people donate which results in our GEMS team being about to give out between 4000-6000 gifts each Christmas!
Once the 'GEMS' are received, we schedule 4 jewelry packing parties. Usually is it our ambassadors, board members, friends and family who attend but we will often open them to groups who have collected a lot for us.
At these parties, we clean, sort and then package all gifts with 3-5 complimentary items so the ladies who receive the gifts can wear in any combination.
These parties are a cherished tradition for our team and are so much fun!
After the packing is complete, all team members volunteer to distribute. Our ambassador team goes across the country and because of our incredible team, we are able to have a meaningful presence in every province most years!
-
The Jewelry Drive is the founding initiative of Gems for Gems! Simply put, collecting 'GEMS' and giving them to the 'GEMS' in the shelters is where our name came from and how this charity began!
The history of the Jewelry Drive is covered in more detail under the 'Founding Story' tab at top of each page.
In short, this initiative was not planned to continue past the first year. Nor were there any plans to turn this Christmas kindness into a charity. However, the women of Calgary rallied over and over again to support survivors in this unique way.
As more people joined, more could be done to help survivors. Before long, charity status was secured and we began building our vision of what we could be with our terrific team and the community!

“I’m genuinely excited to support GEMS this season because I believe in their mission to empower survivors of domestic abuse.
Having personally experienced the challenges of surviving domestic abuse and overcoming such trauma, I understand the vital role that economic independence plays in rebuilding a life.
GEMS’ focus on economic recovery goes beyond financial stability; it’s about restoring hope, confidence, and the ability to create a brighter future.
I admire GEMS’ commitment to breaking the cycle of domestic abuse by providing survivors with essential tools for success. Their holistic approach fosters a supportive community that encourages individuals to realize their potential.
Supporting GEMS means being part of a powerful movement that helps others reclaim their lives, and I’m honored to contribute to this important cause!”

TESTIMONIALS 〰️
“The gift was great!
I couldn’t believe it and thought it was from the shelter at first. But I gave a bracelet to my daughter and I had a necklace and earrings that matched! It was really nice, like the stuff was REALLY nice.
The nicest stuff we have.”
-Laura, Jewelry Recipient
“Always Happy to help! We love what you stand for and what you do. You make YYC a better place.”
-Junior League of Calgary
“The Christmas gift made me feel pretty. I hadn’t felt like that in a long time. It was a ring. Nothing ‘special’ but it fit and was pretty and I just kept looking at it.”
-Beth, Jewelry Recipient
At first I didn’t understand. What is this? Why are you giving it to me? But then I read the note in the bag. I cried. My kids didn’t understand. I’m just grateful. And shocked. And I don’t know. Its weird, and great to be thought of when you don’t even think about yourself like that.
-Cindy, Jewelry Receipient
“I had money and things. Lots of things. Jewelry, cars, big house, but I left it all to be safe.
To keep my three kids safe. So my son wouldn’t grow up beating his wife and my daughters wouldn’t think that’s what men do when they love you because that’s what I told myself. He’s doing it because he wants me all to himself. That I shouldn’t have stayed at the store that long because he would feel like I was looking to meet someone else… you know. Anyway, I just didn’t get it. Gems for Gems. I understand how nice it is but I don’t get why they do it. Just to be nice? I’m nice and I would never think of this. Not now and not before.
I think the best thing about this is that they are getting everyone. Gifts to everyone in here and getting the jewelry from all across the city. I think that’s very neat because everyone is coming together, for us. So ya, I don’t get it but I like it. Thank you.”
